Tips For Coping With Trauma

Last week I was involved in a pretty tense situation at work. I'm okay and my customers were okay. Not going to go into specific, but I thought I'd share some of the coping with trauma information that I've researched and received from professionals that deal with it.

  • Accept the fact that the event is upsetting you
  • Talk to folks you care for and trust about the incident
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Maintain regular eating habits, but don't be afraid to treat yourself to some junk food or your favourite restaurant
  • Do your regular routine
  • Let others help you
  • Don't multitask, take things one at a time as the come
  • It's not weakness to ask for help
  • Exercise regimes help
  • Spend time with your people
  • Do the things that make you happy
  • Avoid work
  • Withdraw from others
  • Take on new projects that will take a lot from you
  • Look for or expect easy answers to your problem
  • Decrease the amount of time you take for yourself to relax and enjoy the things you love
  • Make major life changes
  • Have unrealistic expectations (let's be honest, trauma or not this is a good one)
  • Drink excessively or use drugs. This is what the experts say, but honestly a little pot might calm your nerves (as long as your 25+, because it does probably affect brain development before then)
