S is for Selfie

I know there are a lot of complaints about millennials being narcissistic and taking too many selfies. Maybe they do, maybe they don't. Honestly, I don't care. That being said, I post them semi-regularly now. The reasoning behind this is that I spent a majority of my life hating my body and what I looked like. Now that I'm comfortable enough to take pictures of myself, I'm going to.

If you're feeling good, but self-indulgent and take that selfie. It's not going to hurt anyone.

Here are a few of my favourites from the past few years.

R is for Rockabilly

I <3 rockabilly (and it's variations). It's not that I have a great love of 50's and 60's culture or anything of that nature, but damn that music makes my soul boogie. There's just something about a standing base that gets me going. And the fashion is just phenomenal.

Q is for Questing Knight

Being a geek with anxiety I have an intentionally loose sense of reality that I use as a coping mechanism. Don't get me wrong, I understand the difference between fact and fiction, but that doesn't mean I have created scenarios and such in my head that I use to help me get through troubled times. One of these is the questing knight.

Based on the classic Arthurian grail quest, this is the portrait I paint in my head when I feel like despite everything I've done and worked through, that I'm not where I want to be. I'm still on the journey. There will be set backs and side quests, but one of these days I'll finish my quest. Until then I persevere. Yeah, this probably sounds strange to everyone else, but it's one of those strange things that makes me me.

P is for Pun

My nickname is Pun. I'm a librarian and I have an English/Humanities degree. You might think, given those things that my my nickname comes from the fact that I love to play with words. That's not the case though.

This is where my nickname actually comes from:

Big Punisher was a popular rapper when I was a freshman in high school that was fat. I'm fat. Therefore, the soccer team thought it would be the perfect nickname for me. It bugged me a little when it happened, but honestly, I'm cool with it now. Pun was a great rapper and I still find myself jamming to Still Not A Player on a regular basis.

O is for OG (Original Gamer)

I couldn't think of a good O post today, so I'll share this MC Lars song I really like.

N is for the Neuromantic Movement

I've spoke in the past about my love for William Francis and his William Control project. Over the past 7 years I've been listening to William Control and the music has meant so much to me and my growth as a person. For his past few albums William has spoke of the Neuromantic Movement.  This is what it is, in his own words.

NeuRomance is a place inside the heart where we feel most alive, where desire meets trust, where we can willfully remove the chains that bind our inhibitions and dance and drink and lust without societal boundaries making us feel shame. It's a place we find solidarity with lovers and other strangers that surround us in the bedroom or on the dance floor. We live on our own terms and answer to no one. We cater to ourselves, selfishly indulging rather than abstaining.

You are a part of this movement. With your voices, your high heels and stockings, with your ropes and knives and lust, with your strong hands and delicate hips, you are propelling this movement, It's yours. Take it. Live it. Love it. Endeavor to spread it like a virus. The Neuromantic Movement is here.

I adore it. I see it as a call to action and one that I fully support. I guess I'm just a Neuromantic Boy.

M is for Mikey's Late Night Slice

If you ever find yourself in Columbus, Ohio make sure to check out Mikey's Late Night Slice. I first heard of Mikey's because of this story. I thought it was pretty cool that a local food truck's employees stood up against hate. I had to try it.

The folks at Late Night Slice make quality pizza and feature a unique pizza each week.  The even make vegan pizzas. In addition to the great staff and awesome pizza, the other draw of Late Night Slice is the Unicorn Sauce (formerly known as Slut Sauce). This dipping sauce is heaven in liquid form.

You also have a few other delicious oddities like the Cheezus Crust (and Son of Cheezuz) and the Pizza Dawg.

If you're curious the best specialty pizza I've had from Mikey's was Hot Mikey's Takeover a joint venture between Mikey's Late Night Slice and another Columbus favourite, Hot Chicken Takeover.

L is for Love Songs

I think you can tell a lot about a person by their taste in music. I think this is especially true when you look at their favourite love songs. These four are my all-time favourite love songs. I've also decided to highlight my favorite lyrics.  What are your favourites?

Nightwish - Ghost Love Score

"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
You were the one to cut me,
So I will bleed forever"

William Control - Adore (Fall in Love Forever)

"The road to Hell is paved with one intention, my love."

Vast - Touched

"I'll never find someone quite as touched as you
I'll never love someone the way that I loved you"

Atreyu - Demonology and Heartache

"If I had my way
I'd cut the calluses off your breaking heart
If I could get past the sternum
Cauterize those wounds with
Every kiss I could give to you
I'm holding your heart in my hands
The reason it still beats"

J is for Justin or Jason or Something

My entire life people have been calling me Jason. Now I'm not talking about people that I've only recently met. People I went to church with for years did it. People I've worked with for years did it. I get called Jason at least two or three times a week at work. I guess in defense of my coworkers I do work with a Jason.

Which brings me to my next part of this. Apparently I'm not alone. I've spoke with other Justins who mentioned that the same thing happens to them. Also, many Jason's I've talked to (including the one I work with) have said that they get called Justin all the time.

There's no real point to this post. It's just an observation of something I've always found interesting. Has anybody every experienced anything similar?

I is for Inspiration

Some people look to religion for inspiration. Others get it from quotes by words of wisdom. Me, I get mine from comics and superheroes. They make me want to be a hero and make the world a better place. There's something in me that gives me cold chills when I see heroes do their thing on the big screen. That's what inspires me. Here are some panels that keep me grounded and working towards a better future.
All-Star Superman is the greatest Superman story ever and is why he is the greatest superhero.

I know Preacher isn't a supers story, but being a comic I figured it was still okay to put on here.

H is for Happy Song

Ever since I was a teenager I've had a happy song. This song is one that I can listen to no matter what my mood and smile. I don't think it's actually that big of a stretch to say that the song has saved my life. What's the song you ask? Why it is Around the World from the Red Hot Chili Peppers album, Californication. There is just an energy and positivity in this song that keeps me up.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Around the World

All around the world
We could make time
Rompin' and a stompin'
'Cause I'm in my prime

Born in the north
And sworn to entertain ya
'Cause I'm down for
The state of Pennsylvania

I try not to whine
But I must warn ya
'Bout the motherfuckin' girls
From California

Alabama baby
Said hallelujah
Good god girl
I wish I knew ya

I know I know for sure
That life is beautiful around the world
I know I know it's you
You say hello and then I say I do

Come back baby
'Cause I'd like to say
I've been around the world
Back from Bombay

Fox hole love
Pie in your face
Living in and out
Of a big fat suitcase

Bonafide ride
Step aside my Johnson
Yes I could
In the woods of Wisconsin

Wake up the cake
It's a lake she's kissin' me
As they do when
When they do in Sicily

I know I know for sure
That life is beautiful around the world
I know I know it's you
You say hello and then I say I do

Where you want to go
Who you want to be
What you want to do
Just come with me

I saw God
And I saw the fountains
You and me girl
Sittin' in the Swiss mountains

Me Oh My O
Me and Guy O
Freer than a bird
'Cause we're rockin' Ohio

Around the world
I feel dutiful
Take a wife
'Cause life is beautiful

I know I know for sure
Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang.
I know I know it's you
Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang.

Mother Russia do not suffer
I know you're bold enough
I've been around the world
And I have seen your love
I know I know it's you

You say hello then I say I do

G is for Geek

I'm an absolute geek and I'm cool with that. I love Dungeons and Dragons, read comic books, and watch lots of horror movies. My son is named after my favourite comic book character, Dick Grayson. I am the things I love. I'm my fam, but I'm also just a big ol' collection of geeky passion.

I'm pretty proud of that. I'm doing my part in society, but I'm also just me.

And remember, nerd is bond.

F is for Fam

Fam is the family you choose. You most likely don't have blood ties (though some do).  My fam mean the world to me. It's interesting at some point in my life, "See you later" turned into "Stay safe, love you."

When it comes to biological family, in general I could take them or leave them. I'm really close to a few, have a connection to others, and actively despise a few. I've never even met my biological father and he refuses to acknowledge my existence.  None of this bothers me though, because I've got my fam.

Here are some of my favourite Fam Portraits:

E is for Eagles are Turning People Into Horses: The Movie

I've shared this video here before, but I couldn't think of a more appropriate E post. Sorry it's a couple of days late. I'll catch up and post F and G today.

D is for Dungeons and Dragons

I try to keep the geek related posts to Halls of the Nephilim, but today I'll mention it here. The hobby that means the most to me and has had the most impact on my growth and development as a person is without a doubt, Dungeons and Dragons. I'm still an introvert, but D&D (and drama club) were two things in high school that helped me gain confidence and come out of my shell. In addition to the personal growth it fostered, nearly all of my (non-biological) close relationships have a foundation in Dungeons & Dragons. The geeks I rolled dice with in middle and high school are now my brothers. I met my dearest friend because her screen name in a chat room was a reference to the Drizzt novels. I have a other friends that I met in college because of a gaming group. The perception for D&D is that's it's a  game that is for nerds that live in their parents' basement. The reality for me is that it has made me a much more social creature.
I love these cats and would roll dice with them anytime.
I love this video and can relate.

C is for Cauliflower

My first attempt at cauliflower crust pizza.
This is an odd one, but as I said, there's not really a theme for the month. Recently I've decided to work towards being healthier, because I don't like living in a state of constant pain (or at best discomfort), especially considering I'm only 33. It's a slow process, but I have goals and steps to take to achieve them. Once of those is to fuel my body with better materials and eat less junk. One thing that's helping me do that is cauliflower. It's a low calorie/carb veggie that can be used a descent substitute for many foods. I've been making cauliflower rice for a few years and I enjoy it. I've recently started making the pizzas. I've not perfected it. It can't get it to crisp, but it is really tasty.

Here are some cauliflower recipes that sound good.

B is for Beard

I've talked about beard-y stuff in a previous post that you can read here. I started letting my facial hair grow out because I've never been a manly man and despite what I've said in the past that bothered me. Also, it was another way to cover up my bare flesh, which as a fat person I knew that 's what I was supposed to do. I'm pretty body positive now (always have been with others, but I've allowed myself to be included in the mix) and have some pretty open ideas about gender so I'm past those insecurities.

My beard is a source of pride and self-love, but it's because I just really like it. I even have a regular regime that I take care of it with.

I'm going to take this as an opportunity to give a shout out to one of my old classmate's amazing products. Stellar Feller Beard Company is a small company, based in southern Ohio, that makes high quality beard and skin care products for men. I use their beard balm every day and it keeps my beard nice and soft (and smelling delightful). I highly recommend their Cigar Lounge, Apple Pie, and Sailor's Delight scents, though they're all pretty great. I want to say that in addition to the quality of products one of the things I really love about Stellar Feller is their motto, "Distinguish Yourself." It's classy and isn't full of machismo like so many other beard care product slogans and companies. If you have a beard, do it a favour and grab some Stellar Feller care products for it.

A is for "Awake, Arise, or Be Forever Fall'n."

Paradise Lost: Book I, Line 330

This is my favourite literary quote and some I seek to live by. I mean, who's better inspiration that Lucifer, am I right?

Life doesn't stay in one place, so neither am I. Things are changing and I'm going to work to make those changes mine. Little or big, I'm going to take what comes and make it best for me and my fam.

I've not done the best about keeping a balance in my life. I either focus too much on mental my mental state, or emotion, or physical, and then neglect all the others. I'm going to the doctor, admitting problems, and trying to put better fuel in my body. I'm working on ways to decrease stress and get back to my people.

It's going to take time, but I will rise.
