Momma Sed

Wake up, son of mine
Momma got something to tell you
Changes come
Life will have it's way
With your pride, son
Take it like a man

Hang on, son of mine
A storm is blowing up your horizon

Changes come
Keep your dignity
Take the high road
Take it like a man

Listen up, son of mine
Momma got something to tell you
All about growing pains
Life will pound away
Where the light don't shine, son
Take it like a man

Suck it up, son of mine
Thunder blowing up your horizon

Changes come (Changes come)
Keep your dignity (Keep your dignity)
Take the high road (Take the high road)
Take it like a man (Take it like a man)

Momma said like the rain (This, too, shall pass)
Like a kidney stone (This, too, shall pass)
It's just a broken heart, son
This pain will pass away

MCM - The Neuromantic Boys

Today's Man Crush Monday goes to the Neuromantic Boys. While the gents started as William Control's band,  now they are a group in their own right. Since William announced that he's retiring I have a feeling that my love for these fellows will increase.

IX of Rods

"Don't worry and just enjoy life."

This is advice I've received many times and something I've even told myself from time to time. Unfortunately, when you live with anxiety and depression it's not always that easy.

I've been in really high spirits the last month or so. Other than a few things, life is going really well. I'm pretty happy. The thing is, no matter how good things are, I always have that voice in the back of my head. I'm always watching for the next trouble. I think that's why I've always said that the Nine of Wands/Rods was my Tarot card.

"The Nine of Wands shows a weary, injured man who holds a staff as though in a posture of final defence. He has fought the battle and won. He is protected by a number of wands behind him that appear like a wall around him. He appears drained and exhausted as he leans on his wand but he is ready to go to battle again. He has the look of determination in his eye to overcome this final challenge and reach a point of accomplishment and victory. He stands up for what he believes in and holds firm in those beliefs." Source

Even if life is good, the battle in my head is always just moments away. Even if I'm doing great, I always have to be ready. So what are those wands at my back, supporting me? They're my family. They're my music. They're all those silly games I play. Hell, they're these blogs that I maintain.

Yes this is just another self-indulgent teen-like journal entry, but it's also a reminder to cut people some slack. Even if things are good, you never know what's going on in someone's head or where' they're coming from.

MCM - Matt Mercer

I'm still trying to get back in the habit of posting on this blog too. I'm sure I'll have more substantial things to say, but today we get a Man Crush Monday.

Matt Mercer is a gent that I've got a big crush on. He's clever and creative, which are two traits I absolutely adore. He's cute to and can do all sorts of voices (which isn't surprising considering he's a voice actor). Like many gamers I learned about Matt from his D&D podcast, Critical Role. This is a regular podcast that's recently ended. I've sit and listen to him and his crew play for hours (and I'm just a few episodes in).

In addition to the geek factor, I think he's just plain 'ol cute.

Tips For Coping With Trauma

Last week I was involved in a pretty tense situation at work. I'm okay and my customers were okay. Not going to go into specific, but I thought I'd share some of the coping with trauma information that I've researched and received from professionals that deal with it.

DO

  • Accept the fact that the event is upsetting you
  • Talk to folks you care for and trust about the incident
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Maintain regular eating habits, but don't be afraid to treat yourself to some junk food or your favourite restaurant
  • Do your regular routine
  • Let others help you
  • Don't multitask, take things one at a time as the come
  • It's not weakness to ask for help
  • Exercise regimes help
  • Spend time with your people
  • Do the things that make you happy
DON'T
  • Avoid work
  • Withdraw from others
  • Take on new projects that will take a lot from you
  • Look for or expect easy answers to your problem
  • Decrease the amount of time you take for yourself to relax and enjoy the things you love
  • Make major life changes
  • Have unrealistic expectations (let's be honest, trauma or not this is a good one)
  • Drink excessively or use drugs. This is what the experts say, but honestly a little pot might calm your nerves (as long as your 25+, because it does probably affect brain development before then)

Pinopticon (and a cool Kickstarter)

My friend, Wade, has a new Kickstarter that I wanted to share. Wade makes amazing enamel pins and sells them online via his store Pinopticon. His pins are primarily based on art, literature, culture, and radical (left) politics. These are all things I love! Here's a pic of the pins I've ordered from him already.

The Kickstarter is for a Crystal Shelf lapel pin (with simulated gemstones). Here's the design and below it you can see notations of the shiny parts.

I think it looks sweet and I'm definitely backing it. You can too, but following this link. You should also follow wade on Instagram.

WCW - Aubrey Plaza

I love Aubrey Plaza. She's smart, funny, and quirky. Her performance as Lenny in FX's Legion is absolutely phenomenal.

Horror Tee's For Big Guys

If you're a plus size gorehound like me, you might be wondering where you can grab horror tee's that actually fit. Well after searching for a while, I've found a few places. As far as companies goes, Terror Threads has several shirts that go up to 5XL. Here are a few of my favourites.

Fright Rags is another site that has some spectacular stuff! Like Terror Threads they have stuff that goes up to 5X. Here are some of my favourites.

I've not visited the Slashback Video exhibit but it sounds like a hoot!

In addition, Ebay can be a great place. If you do a search for "plus size horror t-shirts" you get many
hits. I recently grabbed a cool Camp Crystal Lake shirt for just 15 bucks.

And A "Yes" Isn't The Same As An "Oh My God, Yes!"

I normally try to keep gaming related posts to Halls of the Nephilim, but I think this would be a good thing to mention here. Consentacle: A Card Game of Human-Alien Intimacy is a game that's got a few more days left on Kickstarter. Unlike many KS products, if you don't get it through this project, you might not be able to get it at all (as mentioned in a recent update).

The game has different variations, but the point is to play combo cards with your partner to get the most satisfaction. The practice/safe version allows you to talk, but personally I find the regular version more appealing. In this you can make suggestive gestures and noise, but can't actually use words with your partner. They are supposed to read your reactions to figure out what cards to play. I get that this one isn't for everyone one. I definitely wouldn't break it out when the parents come to visit, but it could be a lot of fun to play with a significant other or open minded friend.

I love this project for a few reasons. First it shows that geeks can be kinky. I think this is an obvious statement, but some folks ignore the fact. Second I know that some might find it weird, but there are folks that dig tentacle stuff. I'm one of them. However, my issue is that it's always portrayed as rape. This game is about trust and consent, which as Schaffer the Darklord has taught us, is an absolute must. Ultimately I think this is cool and want to share it with others that might think so too.

Yes that is a tentacle in my pocket, but I am also glad to see you.

S is for Selfie

I know there are a lot of complaints about millennials being narcissistic and taking too many selfies. Maybe they do, maybe they don't. Honestly, I don't care. That being said, I post them semi-regularly now. The reasoning behind this is that I spent a majority of my life hating my body and what I looked like. Now that I'm comfortable enough to take pictures of myself, I'm going to.

If you're feeling good, but self-indulgent and take that selfie. It's not going to hurt anyone.

Here are a few of my favourites from the past few years.

R is for Rockabilly

I <3 rockabilly (and it's variations). It's not that I have a great love of 50's and 60's culture or anything of that nature, but damn that music makes my soul boogie. There's just something about a standing base that gets me going. And the fashion is just phenomenal.

Q is for Questing Knight

Being a geek with anxiety I have an intentionally loose sense of reality that I use as a coping mechanism. Don't get me wrong, I understand the difference between fact and fiction, but that doesn't mean I have created scenarios and such in my head that I use to help me get through troubled times. One of these is the questing knight.

Based on the classic Arthurian grail quest, this is the portrait I paint in my head when I feel like despite everything I've done and worked through, that I'm not where I want to be. I'm still on the journey. There will be set backs and side quests, but one of these days I'll finish my quest. Until then I persevere. Yeah, this probably sounds strange to everyone else, but it's one of those strange things that makes me me.

P is for Pun

My nickname is Pun. I'm a librarian and I have an English/Humanities degree. You might think, given those things that my my nickname comes from the fact that I love to play with words. That's not the case though.

This is where my nickname actually comes from:

Big Punisher was a popular rapper when I was a freshman in high school that was fat. I'm fat. Therefore, the soccer team thought it would be the perfect nickname for me. It bugged me a little when it happened, but honestly, I'm cool with it now. Pun was a great rapper and I still find myself jamming to Still Not A Player on a regular basis.

I couldn't think of a good O post today, so I'll share this MC Lars song I really like.

N is for the Neuromantic Movement

I've spoke in the past about my love for William Francis and his William Control project. Over the past 7 years I've been listening to William Control and the music has meant so much to me and my growth as a person. For his past few albums William has spoke of the Neuromantic Movement.  This is what it is, in his own words.

NeuRomance is a place inside the heart where we feel most alive, where desire meets trust, where we can willfully remove the chains that bind our inhibitions and dance and drink and lust without societal boundaries making us feel shame. It's a place we find solidarity with lovers and other strangers that surround us in the bedroom or on the dance floor. We live on our own terms and answer to no one. We cater to ourselves, selfishly indulging rather than abstaining.

You are a part of this movement. With your voices, your high heels and stockings, with your ropes and knives and lust, with your strong hands and delicate hips, you are propelling this movement, It's yours. Take it. Live it. Love it. Endeavor to spread it like a virus. The Neuromantic Movement is here.

I adore it. I see it as a call to action and one that I fully support. I guess I'm just a Neuromantic Boy.

M is for Mikey's Late Night Slice

If you ever find yourself in Columbus, Ohio make sure to check out Mikey's Late Night Slice. I first heard of Mikey's because of this story. I thought it was pretty cool that a local food truck's employees stood up against hate. I had to try it.

The folks at Late Night Slice make quality pizza and feature a unique pizza each week.  The even make vegan pizzas. In addition to the great staff and awesome pizza, the other draw of Late Night Slice is the Unicorn Sauce (formerly known as Slut Sauce). This dipping sauce is heaven in liquid form.

You also have a few other delicious oddities like the Cheezus Crust (and Son of Cheezuz) and the Pizza Dawg.

If you're curious the best specialty pizza I've had from Mikey's was Hot Mikey's Takeover a joint venture between Mikey's Late Night Slice and another Columbus favourite, Hot Chicken Takeover.

L is for Love Songs

I think you can tell a lot about a person by their taste in music. I think this is especially true when you look at their favourite love songs. These four are my all-time favourite love songs. I've also decided to highlight my favorite lyrics.  What are your favourites?

Nightwish - Ghost Love Score

"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
You were the one to cut me,
So I will bleed forever"

William Control - Adore (Fall in Love Forever)

"The road to Hell is paved with one intention, my love."

Vast - Touched

"I'll never find someone quite as touched as you
I'll never love someone the way that I loved you"

Atreyu - Demonology and Heartache

"If I had my way
I'd cut the calluses off your breaking heart
If I could get past the sternum
Cauterize those wounds with
Every kiss I could give to you
I'm holding your heart in my hands
The reason it still beats"

K is for Kindness

J is for Justin or Jason or Something

My entire life people have been calling me Jason. Now I'm not talking about people that I've only recently met. People I went to church with for years did it. People I've worked with for years did it. I get called Jason at least two or three times a week at work. I guess in defense of my coworkers I do work with a Jason.

Which brings me to my next part of this. Apparently I'm not alone. I've spoke with other Justins who mentioned that the same thing happens to them. Also, many Jason's I've talked to (including the one I work with) have said that they get called Justin all the time.

There's no real point to this post. It's just an observation of something I've always found interesting. Has anybody every experienced anything similar?

I is for Inspiration

Some people look to religion for inspiration. Others get it from quotes by words of wisdom. Me, I get mine from comics and superheroes. They make me want to be a hero and make the world a better place. There's something in me that gives me cold chills when I see heroes do their thing on the big screen. That's what inspires me. Here are some panels that keep me grounded and working towards a better future.
All-Star Superman is the greatest Superman story ever and is why he is the greatest superhero.

I know Preacher isn't a supers story, but being a comic I figured it was still okay to put on here.

H is for Happy Song

Ever since I was a teenager I've had a happy song. This song is one that I can listen to no matter what my mood and smile. I don't think it's actually that big of a stretch to say that the song has saved my life. What's the song you ask? Why it is Around the World from the Red Hot Chili Peppers album, Californication. There is just an energy and positivity in this song that keeps me up.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Around the World

All around the world
We could make time
Rompin' and a stompin'
'Cause I'm in my prime

Born in the north
And sworn to entertain ya
'Cause I'm down for
The state of Pennsylvania

I try not to whine
But I must warn ya
'Bout the motherfuckin' girls
From California

Alabama baby
Said hallelujah
Good god girl
I wish I knew ya

I know I know for sure
That life is beautiful around the world
I know I know it's you
You say hello and then I say I do

Come back baby
'Cause I'd like to say
I've been around the world
Back from Bombay

Fox hole love
Pie in your face
Living in and out
Of a big fat suitcase

Bonafide ride
Step aside my Johnson
Yes I could
In the woods of Wisconsin

Wake up the cake
It's a lake she's kissin' me
As they do when
When they do in Sicily

I know I know for sure
That life is beautiful around the world
I know I know it's you
You say hello and then I say I do

Where you want to go
Who you want to be
What you want to do
Just come with me

I saw God
And I saw the fountains
You and me girl
Sittin' in the Swiss mountains

Me Oh My O
Me and Guy O
Freer than a bird
'Cause we're rockin' Ohio

Around the world
I feel dutiful
Take a wife
'Cause life is beautiful

I know I know for sure
Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang.
I know I know it's you
Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang.

Mother Russia do not suffer
I know you're bold enough
I've been around the world
And I have seen your love
I know I know it's you

You say hello then I say I do

G is for Geek

I'm an absolute geek and I'm cool with that. I love Dungeons and Dragons, read comic books, and watch lots of horror movies. My son is named after my favourite comic book character, Dick Grayson. I am the things I love. I'm my fam, but I'm also just a big ol' collection of geeky passion.

I'm pretty proud of that. I'm doing my part in society, but I'm also just me.

And remember, nerd is bond.

F is for Fam

Fam is the family you choose. You most likely don't have blood ties (though some do).  My fam mean the world to me. It's interesting at some point in my life, "See you later" turned into "Stay safe, love you."

When it comes to biological family, in general I could take them or leave them. I'm really close to a few, have a connection to others, and actively despise a few. I've never even met my biological father and he refuses to acknowledge my existence.  None of this bothers me though, because I've got my fam.

Here are some of my favourite Fam Portraits:

Me with three of the four gents featured in the ONLYFAM track doing our best early 90's rap album cover pose.
