Feel Good Jams - Dressed in Dreams

This song comes to my mind when I need a major change in my life. I feel one coming (hopefully sooner rather than later).
Where is the sun?
You're numb and, you're numb and dumb
Please, please I need the seeds of change
it's wearing a new dream
it's ripping at the seams
I've come undone
And there is one place left to run... And that is...

Never let yourself give in
When you're trying to start again
Put on your dreams and let's go

I've come so far and gone so, and gone so low
I've fallen in decay
Always try to find a way out and up to better days
Are waiting for me
And I will come dressed up in dreams

Never let yourself give in
When you're trying to start again
Put on your dreams and let's go

I won't give up at all
I want the freedom to dream the impossible
I will make it real

MCM - Dylan Marron

I am convinced that Dylan Marron is a perfect person. If he seems familiar, that's because I featured on of his Unboxing videos in a previous post. He's just a super charming, socially aware chap that's just a delight. He's also the voice of Carlos on Welcome to Night Vale.

Mikal kHill Digital Catalog - PWYW Until Monday

Mikal kHill has made his entire digital catalog (including things you can't find anymore) pay-what-you-want until Monday. Mikal is fam and a great dude. I interviewed him back in May. You can read that here.  Help my dude out this holiday season and support a few good causes (25% of what he makes during this time will be split between #NoDAPL and the Autistic Self Advocacy Network).

Inspirational Captain America Art

This is a repost from Zack Dolan Art. These are his words, not mine, though I am in agreement with him and the sentiment behind this.

Hate has no allegiance to any party or person. Hate does not care who you are or where you're from or what you believe. Hate only appropriates these things for its own ends and uses the weak minded to spread itself disguised as political or religious beliefs. Hate does not need a reason, only an opportunity.

It's not about politics. It's not about who you voted for or what party you subscribe to. It's not about red or blue. It's about being a decent human being. it's that simple.

No one needs to be told their fears are unjustified by those who do not have to be afraid themselves. They need our Empathy.

No one needs to be told their lives are secondary to a political ideology or that there are bigger problems to worry about than their fear and pain. They need our Humanity.

No one needs virtue signaling platitudes or hollow gestures. They need our Action.

They need us to BE there. They need us to show them that there are still those who have not given in to hate or fear or despair that are ready to fight to make sure they don't have to either. They need us to step up on that line and stare right into the face of evil and hate and show them that we will not let it take away their hope, their rights or their lives. To show them that when they need us we will BE THERE to say "No further. Not Today."

Library Resource: Programming Librarian

I discovered when a fellow manager recommended this article on the post-election library. The website was created by the American Library Association's Public Program's Office and it's phenomenal. It has programming for all types of libraries: public, school, academic, and special. You can search by age, budget, topic, program type, and library type. Since discovering this website I've shared it with everyone I know that would even been remotely interested, including teachers and people that just enjoy crafts and making things by hand. I figured For the Love of Pun would just be one more way to reach out and let others know.

Do you have any cool resources like this? If so, please share.

MCM - Joe Biden

Going to be honest, even before the pictures of young crazy uncle Joe surfaced, I thought Biden was a handsome older gent. I dig Joe because he seems like a legitimately nice guy. I've been a fan of Biden memes for a while, but the post election ones are a godsend. Seriously, check out Motivational Biden.

Job vs. Career

I've heard quotes similar to this for a while and I think at this point in my life I believe it. I did a school visit a few days ago and after talking about out new after school snack program at the library, one of the teachers said, "I can tell you really love what you do. It always makes me smile when people love their work." She's right though. I really do love what I do.

To be honest, I became a librarian because I had a bachelor's degree in English and I didn't want to have to get a PHD to do something with my degree. The library thing was something I could do with just a master's program (plus I live in the Mecca of libraries, Ohio). However, I quickly learned while in school that I was passionate about what libraries do. I know that "knowledge is power" sounds cheesy, but it's true. Librarians are the unsung heroes of freedom of information and patron confidentiality.

I know that I don't always love my current position. To be honest, there are things I'm not 100% happy with that my system does. That being said, I have no doubt that I'm in the right field and I'm doing great work. I have big plans for myself and the communities I serve. I may not always love my job, but I have no doubt I have the right career. I'm a librarian and that's a great thing.

Knotty Words

Looking for a unique gift? You should consider my friend Quill's adult colouring book, Knotty Words. It's not for the easily offended, but it is delightful.

I recommend fine point coloured pens with books like this because of the intricate detail.

Fight Like A Girl

I love the work of Emilie Autumn. She's a wonderful musician and actress. Today's she's giving away digital copies of her album Fight Like A Girl for free.

From Emilie's Facebook page:
I am giving away my Fight Like A Girl album free today, so please take it and share it with someone you think it might empower.

Here is the download link:

If you are scared, if you are sad, if you are hopeless, sing with me.

If you believe that sexism and sexual assault and racism and homophobia and climate change are not only real but that they are NOT good things (because to much of America they are all "just fine" things), sing with me.

Stay enraged, stay loud, and stay you.

One foot in front of the other.

~ EA

Dylan Marron is a perfect person. I've been watching his unboxing videos on Seriously TV for a few months now. This one, in particular, hit home. It's really something to think about.

Self Care Isn't Selfish

In times like this it's always important to remember the importance of self care. It's not selfish to take care of yourself, it's the healthy and responsible thing to do, Here are some self-care tips that help me and those I love.
  1. It's okay to be sad, angry, and depressed. It's okay to scream. It's okay to cry. Just try not to dwell on it too much.
  2. Remember the basics. Drink plenty of water. Make sure to eat regularly. Try to get adequate sleep.
  3. Unplug yourself from the web. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook.
  4. Get out and take a walk. Nature is beautiful and the fresh air will do you some good. If riding bikes is something you do, allow yourself to take a nice relaxing bike trip.
  5. Exercise. Yeah I'm not the best at this one, but those endorphins will make you feel much better.
  6. Reach out to your support network. Hopefully you have someone, non-judgmental, you can talk to and vent.
  7. Be creative. Draw, right, sing. Artistic endeavors can be great coping mechanisms.
  8. Treat  yourself. None of us are idle rich, but let yourself go out to eat and see a movie. Buy that new dress you've had your eye on.
  9. Yoga and meditation helps. You can find all sorts of yoga instructional videos online.
  10. Pray. I'm not the praying type, but if that's your thing go for it.
  11. Read a book. Exercising your mind is important.
  12. Watch a movie, listen to music. Let yourself zone out.
  13. Laugh. You Tube is full of funny videos. I highly recommend this one
  14. Never underestimate the benefits of masturbation. Sometimes you just need some me time to get your head cleared.
  15. I know it seems silly, but adult colouring books are great. If you get the really intricate ones though, make sure to pick up some fine tipped colored pens.
  16. Finally if you're in a dark place and can't get out, seek help. You're not alone and you're strong than you'll ever know.
This is from the Knotty Words adult colouring book by my friend, Mathew "Quill" Vandeneynden

In Fearful Day, In Raging Night....

I'm a geek and because of this I find ways to make the things I read and love applicable to reality. In the DC Comics universe there are individuals who possess rings of power associated with the core emotions. You've probably heard of Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) who his just one member of the Green Lantern Corps. These Lanterns are powered by Willpower/Force of Will (which for some reason is an emotion). There are Corps for fear, rage, avarice, compassion, love, and hope. That last Corps, the Blue Lanterns are my favorite. This is their oath.

The Blue Lantern Corps resonate with me deeply. Despite everything that happens, I have to be hopeful. If I'm not I go to a dark place. I've been there before and each time it's harder to come back. I have to remain hopeful. That being said, the Blue Lanterns are a relatively weak group on their own. Their primary function is to bolster Green Lanterns. Without Willpower, Hope can do little.

And that's it. I will be hopeful and work for a better future for not just my son, but everyone. However, I need support to do so. Well all do. We are still stronger together. Don't forget that.

Moving Forward

I didn't sleep well last night. I had chest pains and my anxiety gave me several rashes. The nation (though it seems not the majority) have elected Donald Trump as president. Never in a million years had I thought this would be a reality.

There are things we can learn from this. There is a lot of ignorance and hate in this country still. Some of us have privilege, that often prevents us from seeing it first had, but it's there. I don't want to think that all of the ignorance stems from hate though. I think some of it is true ignorance (willing or not) at the plight of our fellow man. We need to educate these ignorant folks. We also need to help the disenfranchised and hurting. Unfortunately, I believe the group will be increasing over the next four years. Remember, when one of us hurts, we all hurt.

I'm taking these elections results as a call to action. I've tried to do my part to help others, but I know I could be doing more. Take care of yourself, take care of others, and let's all try to do better.

I Want To Be A Merman

Project Mermaids has added a plus-size merman to their campaign, actor Harvey Guillen.
